A special thanks to our beekeeping instructors extraordinaire! Richard and Susan Thomas gave a wonderful presentation to The School of Green August 23rd. We wanted to give them a special thank-you! Richard, who is a biologist, focused on bee-keeping while Susan, who has a doctorate in ecology, focused on bee-friendly flowers and the bee garden concept.
We look forward to more bee-keeping instruction for our 2017/2018 workshops!

Bugs on your Plate!
The crew over here at School of Green is very excited about the future including bugs on your plate. We are so excited about it that we are adding "Bugs on Your Plate" to our curriculum for the next School of Green 2017/2018 season! We will be showcasing all sorts of bug-centered food items like chips, protein bars, and even cookies! We will be cooking with cricket protein as well.
To get ready for this workshop enjoy watching the amazing documentary "Bugs on the Menu".

She can be contacted through the Jefferson County Solid Waste education Program if you would like to know more about composting. Composting is fun and imperative for our soil. We can't wait to offer this workshop again!

Free Cider Making Workshop!
Join us on September 20th from 5pm- 7pm at Senergy Station for a cider making workshop with David Goldsmith.
The class will feature a discussion on the art of making hard cider (pear, apple, Asian pear), including a demonstration of equipment used, and approaches to home cider making.
Everyone will be able to press their own juices for later processing. Whether you wish to make hard cider or just have some great cider for drinking, this class is for you.
What to bring:
* Apples/pears/Asian pears for pressing ( a 5 gallon bucket will yield about a gallon of juice)
*A clean container to take your cider home

David is an expert in home-fermentation and we're sure that you will love this workshop! David has been a home brewer for the past 7 years. He mainly brews beers; ales and sometimes lagers A few years back he became interested in making hard cider after participating in a apple pressing party where he ended up with a few gallons of juice. Looking for a cider that was not too dry and expressed the juice from which it was made, he researched cider making and 'back sweetening' techniques. While always a work in progress, he will talk about the technique he uses and what he has found over the past several seasons of hard cider making. Its easy, its fun and its delicious.
Learn the craft of cider-making just in time for apple season here in the Pacific Northwest. You will learn everything you need to know and you can go home with your own handcrafted hard cider!

The Dirt Rich School is a nonprofit organization located on Compass Rose Farms, an abundant 40-acre property that is a peaceful sanctuary with gardens, ponds, forests, fields, creeks and paths. There are countless places to wander, sit and observe nature. In addition, it is home to a beautiful permaculture demonstration site. We are located near Port Townsend at the tip of Discovery Bay in Northwest Washington.
We teach applied Permaculture design, modern homesteading, holistic animal husbandry, and sustainable food production through a mentorship program offering a hands on learning experience.

Fall is a great time in the Pacific Northwest to create rain gardens. Storms will undoubtedly bring lots of rain, often lasting for hours. Does the runoff from your roof, driveways, and walkways end up in the nearest storm drains or are they directed to a rain garden? There are some in Port Townsend that do this already but many more are needed to unburden the existing infrastructure by filtering polluted runoff on site before it goes into the storm drains.
Rain gardens are shallow depressions that collect rainwater runoff from hard surfaces. They can be shaped to fit into your lot and landscaping and some can be installed in neighborhood ROW's with the City's help along with local volunteers. Storm drains do not flow to wastewater treatment plants, but discharge without treatment to our local water bodies which negatively affects water quality for
wildlife and human health.
Rain gardens end up adding beauty to a yard and neighborhood with lush plantings that perform a
much needed natural service.
If you're interested in coming to this workshop,
talk to your neighbors and friends and build some excitement about installing rain gardens in
your neighborhood.

Tiny House on Wheels Workshop
Wow! The THOW (Tiny House on Wheels) workshop was SO much fun! Mr. Kevin Coker, architect, told us about some very important considerations in creating and constructing your own THOW. The lovely miss Julia Franz also shared with us her experience in building in and living in her THOW as a first-time builder. As a bonus, Mr. Peter Sing made all of our brains tingle talking about his inventions in the world of SIP technology. All of it was fascinating!!!

The container gardening workshop with the lovely Dana Ecelberger was so much fun and so informative! Dana really knows her stuff and is an amazing person to boot!
Some awesome things we learned:
-Keeping on top of moisture and nutrients in a container is important because of the small amount of soil.
-Moisture meters can help!
-Even carrots and tomatoes can grow in a container? (Isn't that cool? Who knew??)
-Vegetables like a pH of around 7. You can get moisture meters that tell you pH too. (Yay technology!)
-18 inches is a good depth for veggies in a container garden....
There is so much other wonderful information to share, we just can't include it all Be sure to watch our schedule as we WILL have Dana back to teach us more!
